That’s a wrap on our Matching Game this week! Here’s what I learned: Having something to look forward to, even as silly and simple as this, was oddly renewing. Getting dressed did wonders for me this week and helped propel me forward. We joke about our yoga pants and sweats, but they really do start to impact more than we think. The Matching Game was about far more than fashion and even less about some sort of statement. Rather it was a way to play with my daughter. Little did I know it would be even more valuable to me. I tend to gravitate toward people who let me in. Those who live beyond the surface. A recent conversation with one of these friends forced me to grow up a little. I was whining about this, all of this. Some validated, some not. She was a gentle sounding board and then gracefully offered exactly what it was I didn’t realize I needed to hear. The reminder I had somehow lost sight of. I have tools to handle this. There is loss enveloped in this undefined time, in this season. Use the gift of perspective for good. Rather than sinking, help others float.✨The greatest lesson I learned from loss is that no two people feel it the same. There is no magical formula, step-by-step list or rhyme that will unanimously release the burden. ✨If you are on fire, those closest to you will catch your spark. Caution: That can be for better or for worse. ✨Communicate clearly. Believe it or not, they can’t read your mind. Do yourself and your people a solid and communicate it. Speak it, write it, heck, sing it if you are so inclined. ✨When I have been in some of the hardest and darkest times, going outside seemed unappealing. Do it anyway. It forces you to get dressed, breathe new air, move your body and change your environment. ✨When your bucket feels empty, fill someone else’s. Just trust me on this one. Be well, friends. Little did I know what this year would hold when I chose the word REFINE. How about you, how’s your word working out right about now? It’s almost prophetic, this word that seems to have chosen me. Because remember when I said it scared me? I leaned in anyway. At least I thought I did. And that’s when it was easier. Life, that is. That is when my husband and his team of employees had the option of working, healing and using their gifts. That was when my child was being poured into by therapists and teachers while she developed social skills. That was when my son was building forts with the neighborhood kids every afternoon. That was when I finally came to a place of peace I had worked damn hard to get to. For some, this is the pause they have desperately needed. A forced reset that just might heal something they never realized was broken. For others, it’s a disconnect, it’s an interruption and a new way to argue. And even still, there are those that this virus has infected without actually making them sick. It has already taken too much. And just like the earth is healing itself from the harsh of winter, I pray we all will find healing. We’re actually not all in this together. How each of us as individuals is being affected is not the same, should not be compared and is worthy. Worthy of what? Acknowledgement, validation and perhaps grief? While each of us is feeling this uniquely different, THAT is how we can find unity. Yesterday, I spent the better part of the afternoon failing. In a desperate attempt to feel useful, I unearthed the sewing machine I’ve never actually learned how to use. As it turns out, making masks is not a way I’ll be able to contribute. I cursed more at that sewing machine than was necessary which really was a reaction to it all - everything. Going back to what I know, my studio, was bittersweet. Part “waving the white flag”, part “protecting my peace.” When I spent those hours getting frustrated and adding to my whelm, I took away from my own and my family’s peace. I selfishly want to do some greater good but at what cost? I apologized to my quad and we rallied around the fire over a game of Yahtzee. Let’s all remember to be gentle. It’s simple and the only investment is a few minutes of your time. Do you have a pair of jeans that are tired? Perhaps the hem is too long or maybe even a little short. Give them a quick refresh and fluff the hem in a few quick steps. Swipe through to follow along and see just how easy it is. Grab your favorite scissors and let’s get started! 1/Standing in front of a mirror, decide where you want the hem to ultimately fall by rolling pant leg one time, evenly all the way around. 2/Use a piece of chalk to mark your line. 3/Carefully turn jeans inside out and cut along chalk line. 4/Use removed piece of denim as a template for the second pant leg. 5/Begin snipping along the bottom of each pant leg. Don’t worry about being too precise or even. 6/Rub the snipped hems against each other rigorously to encourage the denim to loosen and fray. This part will be messy! 7/Give the jeans a quick hand rinse, continuing to ruffle their feathers, so the speak. 8/Throw them in the dryer and let them fluff to their glory! • • • #denimdiy #naptimediy #frayedhem #fluffyhem #chewedhem
Until I find myself back at my favorite local spot sipping the original Lavender Latte I fell in love with, I’m whipping up my own version. The secret is making the syrup from scratch that takes less than 10 minutes, includes 3 ingredients and no added nonsense. 1 cup water 1 cup sugar (can sub stevia) 1 T. dried lavender flowers (more or less depending on desired intensity. I prefer to really taste the lavender.) Combine water and sugar and lightly stir until sugar fully dissolves. Add lavender and allow to simmer slightly. The longer you allow to simmer, the more flavorful your syrup will be. Use a fine mesh sifter to extract flowers from liquid as you pour into desired container. Allow to cool. I whipped up a homemade lavender latte this morning in my new favorite mug and proceeded to see the results of yesterday’s studio time. It took everything in me not to skip along like a little girl on Christmas morning. I opened the window shade and paused to appreciate the rain we have received and the warmth of the sun, acknowledging the hope of spring. I noticed the buds of new growth as the dormant begins to unearth. We will again, I believe this. If we choose to do this well.✨I uncovered yesterday’s creations and exhaled a breath I didn’t realize I was holding in. For too long, this work became my worth. I depended on it for validation and purpose. Today, I was able to breathe comfortably because I have refined my posture. This work is not who I am, rather what I get to do.
